Many people color their hair to cover gray hair growth or to completely change their hair color. A study was conducted in 2008 and found 75 percent of American women dye their hair and 88 percent feel their hair has an effect on their confidence. You don't always need to go to the salon for a new hair color and a boost in your confidence, because you can change up your hair color with highlights at home. Here are two different ways you can highlight your hair.

Unsweetened Powdered Drink Mix

Highlighting your hair with punch drink mix is simple, safe, and is a temporary color that can last for several months. The hardest part is deciding which color to put on your hair as a highlight. Or, you can use several different colors of drink mix on different parts of your hair.

The lighter you hair is, the less powdered drink mix you will need to color your hair. For dark brown or black hair, you will need two or more packets of powdered drink mix for every cup of water. Or, you can first lighten the sections of hair you will be coloring. For brown or blonde hair, you will only need approximately one packet of powdered drink mix per cup of water. Then, if you want a darker hair color, add more powdered drink mix to the water.

  1. Section off your hair into two or three ponytails with elastics to keep them separated.
  2. Boil two to three cups of water, depending on how many sections of hair you are going to color. Then, add the appropriate number of packets of powdered drink mix to the boiling water and stir until they have dissolved.
  3. Pour the dyed water into two to three plastic cups.
  4. Dip the sections of your hair into the dye and let them sit in the dye for 20 to 30 minutes.
  5. Remove your hair from the dye and squeeze the excess moisture from your hair with paper towels.
  6. Dry your hair and style as usual, but don't wash your hair for 48 hours. This will give the dye time to set in your hair.

Chalk

Chalk is an easy way to add temporary highlights and color too all your hair or just specific sections. To highlight your hair with chalk, you will need some non-oil-based chalk that you can find at an art supply or craft store. Select the color or colors of chalk you want to apply onto your hair.

  1. Section off your hair into one-inch sections.
  2. Dampen each section of hair with a spray bottle filled with water.
  3. Loop a section of your wet hair once around the piece of chalk, beginning at the top part of your hair where you want the color to begin. Pull the chalk down through your hair allowing the section of hair to slide around the chalk, applying color onto your hair as you pull.
  4. Allow your hair to dry.

If you want to add more than one color to each section of hair, apply the lightest color first, then add each progressively darker color. This will help prevent the dark colors from smudging into the lighter colors as you add each color to your hair.

Once your hair is dry, use a flatiron to heat the sections of hair to set the chalk color in the hair strands. Use the flatiron to curl and style your hair as you normally would. Continue this process with the remaining sections of chalk-highlighted hair.

The first time you wash your hair, the color may completely wash out of your hair. If you have lighter or color-treated hair, the color may take several washing to completely come out.
